Spring 2022 Newsletter

After almost two years, UPLIFT is back in person, and we are loving it! Following CDC guidelines and listening to the wishes of our families, we made the decision to resume in-person events in December. So far, we have bowled at The Alley, gone Crabbing with Tia, and created mini masterpieces at the Isle of Palms Exchange Club. As we welcome Spring 2022 with its buzzing energy and promise of warmer days ahead, we do so with grateful and joyful hearts. The last two years have been difficult for all of us, but this Spring brings a hope and a lightness that we have needed. We can’t wait to enjoy what this new season will bring. With gratitude, Anna Lonon

Iced Out! A Cold and Successful February

TLF was awarded the Jeff Cook Cares Grant of $2,500 at the February Stingrays event. We are honored to receive this grant for our families, and loved getting on the ice, too!

Our Chi Omega friends at College of Charleston raised $2,000 for us at their February Polar Plunge at Isle of Palms. CofC’s amazing, passionate students have been supporters, donors, and volunteers for our organization since our inception. We value our relationship with CofC and all our student philanthropists! Go Cougars!

New Resources

To help our families who have recently lost a parent or caregiver to cancer, we have created a Counseling and Grief Resource handout. This handout provides a list of counseling and grief resources available in the Lowcountry, including group counseling, individual grief counseling, and other organizations.

Through our Michelle Somogyi Nemeth Mini Grant Program, TLF provides mini grants to help UPLIFT families afford counseling services. For more information, visit thelononfoundation.org/minigrant

Bridges of Hope, in partnership with The Lonon Foundation, will be holding a spring community ritual, Hope Blossoms. This event is an interactive gardening event to symbolize the seasons of our grief and acknowledge our journey forward. As we decorate a pot, scoop the soil, plant a bulb, together we will reflect on how the lives of those we've lost inspire us to keep going; keep growing. The event will be held on a scenic waterfront lawn and feature live music and activities for the whole family.

Thursday, April 7, 6-8 PM The Lawn at Alhambra Hall 131 Middle St, Mount Pleasant

UPLIFT in Your Home

Our Spring UPLIFT in your home activity is a “Dream Tree.”

Spring is a time for new growth and regrowth, so this is a perfect time to start thinking of your dreams! You will need a few pieces of paper (white or multi-color paper will work), pens or markers, scissors, and glue. With your child or family, start by drawing a trunk of a tree and the limbs along the tree trunk on a piece of paper. Next, cut several leaf shaped pieces of paper. On each leaf, write or draw one dream. While doing this activity, you could ask your child or family “what is a big dream?,” “what is a dream I can help with?,” or “what is a dream we can do together?” The last step is to glue your leaves to the tree limbs!

UPLIFT Monthly Check-In

Each month our UPLIFT Program Coordinator, Katie Lowe, MS, CCLS, will be conducting a check-in call with each of the families enrolled in UPLIFT. She’ll help enhance our relationships with families, offer additional support, ask about life updates, and provide an opportunity for parents and caregivers to share any changes or challenges their family is experiencing. She is excited to speak with our families again soon!
